Meta's best decision with the Quest 3S? It comes with Batman: Arkham Shadow.

The Quest 3S is Meta's entry-level headset, a simplified version of the Meta Quest 3. Yet, it can run the same games. By keeping costs down, Meta made some smart choices for this more affordable headset. Being Batman will therefore offer a very similar experience on both devices. That said, the Quest 3 remains superior... but it costs $499.99. With a price of $299.99, the Quest 3S represents a more advantageous choice.

The Quest 3S: a smart balance between performance and cost

The Quest 3S largely takes over the design of the Quest 2 and the performance of the Quest 3. It is equipped with the same processor Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, the same cameras for color passthrough, and the same Touch Plus controllers. Like the other Quest models, it is a standalone device that works without a wired connection, a definite advantage over the PSVR 2.

With 514 grams, the Quest 3S weighs almost the same as the Quest 3 (515 grams). However, it is noticeably bulkier due to savings on two key components: lenses and screens.

The Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses, like the Quest 2, while the Quest 3 features pancake lenses. These are not only thinner, but also offer better image quality and allow the headset to sit closer to the face, making it better balanced. In terms of resolution, the Quest 3S displays 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, like the Quest 2. In comparison, the Quest 3 offers a higher resolution (2064 x 2208) and a slightly wider field of view.

Still, the Quest 2's screen was already very satisfying for gaming and navigating, and that remains true for the Quest 3S. Arkham Shadow, for example, the rendering is more than adequate. Sure, the graphics don't rival those of a PS5... but on the Quest 3S, they are good enough to make the experience immersive and fun. Sneaking through the sewers or neutralizing enemies remains pure pleasure.

Quest 3S or Quest 3: Which is the best option?

If you already own a Quest 2, upgrading to the Quest 3 will be a significant upgrade. The Quest 3S, on the other hand, is primarily a good value. It uses the same processor as the Quest 3, ensuring smooth performance and visually better-looking games. However, only a few exclusive games, such as Arkham Shadow, require a Quest 3 or Quest 3S.

The best argument in favor of the Quest 3S is precisely Arkham Shadow, a game included free with the headset until the end of April. Playing Batman in VR is a unique experience. Hiding in the heights, pouncing on an enemy... all from a first-person perspective... puts you directly in the shoes of the Dark KnightThis game is more than just a promotional addition: it could well be the gem that VR has been waiting for to justify the entire ecosystem.

A varied game library

If becoming the masked vigilante isn't your thing, the Quest 3S also gives you access to a vast library of VR games, like Beat Saber Or Resident Evil 4. Maestro, a music game where you conduct an orchestra, is a particularly fun new addition. Additionally, you can stream Steam VR games directly to your headset via a wireless connection, adding even more possibilities.

That said, while Meta highlights the Quest 3S's AR and passthrough features, I've yet to see any mixed reality apps or games that surpass fully immersive VR experiences.

Passthrough, which allows you to see the real world through the headset's cameras, remains a gimmick for me. The addition of the "action" button to quickly switch between immersive and passthrough modes is handy, but I mainly use it to take notes or check a message before diving back into a game.

The limits of the Quest 3S

The Quest 3S doesn't solve some of VR's fundamental problems: wearing a bulky headset that isolates you from the outside world remains a hassle. Hand tracking is decent, but you'll probably prefer using the controllers to interact with games. After about 45 minutes of play, as in Arkham Shadow, the weight of the headset is felt, requiring a break. Fortunately, the Y-strap of the Quest 3S is more comfortable than that of the Quest 2.

Still, I realize I only use the Quest 3S for work. For gaming in my free time, I often prefer my PS5 or Steam Deck. These devices allow me to chat with my family while I play, unlike VR, which cuts me off from the world.

A simple conclusion: excellent value for money

At $299.99, the Quest 3S offers impressive performance for its price. Even with slightly smaller screens, it outperforms most headsets available at this price point.

If only for Arkham Shadow, the Quest 3S is worth a look. And for those looking to venture into VR without breaking the bank, it's probably the best choice currently available.
