Disney Officially Dominates the 2024 Box Office, Marking a Huge Comeback After a Slump in 2023

After a 2023 that could be described as moderately difficult—or downright disastrous—The Walt Disney Company has brilliantly reclaimed its crown as the box-office king in 2024. With an impressive total of $5.46 billion in worldwide revenue ($2.23 billion in the United States and $3.23 billion internationally), Disney has once again become the number-one studio domestically and internationally. This achievement also marks the first time since 2019 that a studio has surpassed $5 billion worldwide, a clear sign that the box office is returning to pre-pandemic levels.

2024 was an exceptional year for "The House of Mouse", which produced three of the year's four biggest hits, including two blockbusters that surpassed the billion-dollar mark. This success allowed Disney to top the box office for the eighth time in nine years.

The Big Winners of 2024

The year's biggest triumph is undoubtedly Pixar's "Inside Out 2", which made history by becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $1.7 billion in worldwide revenue ($653 million in the United States and $1.05 billion internationally). Not only did this sequel set the record for the highest-grossing PG film, surpassing "Incredibles 2," but it also rose to 8th place among the highest-grossing films in history worldwide.

In another category, Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" shattered records by becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with $1.34 billion in revenue ($637 million in the United States and $701 million internationally). With a spectacular opening of $211 million in the domestic market, the film ranks as the 6th-biggest opening in history.

The success continued with "Moana 2", the highly anticipated animated sequel released at Thanksgiving. The film achieved the best five-day opening ever with $225 million in the United States and has already grossed $906 million worldwide. It is on track to surpass the billion-dollar mark.

Other Notable Successes

Beyond these blockbusters, Disney enjoyed other successes:

  1. - "Mufasa: The Lion King", in theaters for only two weeks, has already reached $365 million worldwide.
  2. - Timothée Chalamet's biopic, "A Complete Unknown", has grossed $29 million since its December release.
  3. - Disney-owned 20th Century Studios also shone with films such as "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" ($398 million), "Alien: Romulus" ($351 million), and "The First Omen" ($54 million).
  4. - Even more modest titles found their audience, such as "Kinds of Kindness" ($16.4 million) and "A Real Pain" ($9.3 million).

    What to Expect in 2025?

Disney appears well positioned to surpass 2024 with a packed 2025 schedule. On the Marvel front, highly anticipated films such as "Captain America: Brave New World", "Thunderbolts", and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" will arrive by July. In animation, a sequel to "Zootopia" and Pixar's "Elio" are also on the schedule.

Other major projects include live-action adaptations of "Snow White" and "Lilo & Stitch", as well as new installments in popular franchises such as "Avatar: Fire and Ash", "Tron: Ares", "Freakier Friday", and "Predator: Badlands".
