There are stories that restore faith in the magic of the Internet and human kindness. For Reid, a 7-year-old boy, the heartbreaking loss of his precious Pokémon cards turned into a true modern fairy tale. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of the employees of the airline United Airlines, what was supposed to be a sad life lesson ended with an epic delivery of 15,000 cards. Here’s a look back at this heartwarming viral story.
A Pokémon card collection lost at the airport
The story begins with a mishap many parents fear. While passing through the Denver International Airport terminal, Reid, 7 years old, accidentally leaves behind his binder filled with his favorite Pokémon cards.
Despite frantic searches by airport staff and a call for help launched by his father, Graham, on the popular community platform Reddit, the binder remains missing. Reid’s mother still files an official lost property report, but the family resigns themselves: they will have to accept the loss and start the collection from scratch. That was before a very special team stepped in.
The magic of social media and United Airlines’ mobilization
From Reddit to customer service: a successful investigation
The miracle happens when the social media team and customer service of United Airlines connect Graham’s viral Reddit post with the lost property report filed by Reid’s mother. Moved by the situation, they decide to launch an internal call to see if employees would be willing to donate some trading cards to comfort the little boy.
A call for donations that went worldwide
According to Graham, the initiative caused a sensation within the company. “ The response was so impressive that they thought it was going to go viral ,” he says.
While the company expected to collect about 2,000 cards (already a huge number for a 7-year-old!), the final result exceeded all expectations. Employees mobilized globally, from Hawaii to Ireland, to send their own treasures.

An emotional gift presentation in Denver
On January 19, the family was invited to Denver airport for what they thought would be a simple card handover. They then discovered an incredible haul: more than 15,000 Pokémon cards, weighing nearly 40 kilos in total, packed in brand-new boxes and binders!
Jonna McGrath, vice president of the United Airlines hub in Denver, explained:
“ When employees learned how Reid had lost his binder, they immediately rallied [...], even if it meant finding a new home for some of our beloved Pokémon cards. ”
Overwhelmed with emotion, Reid’s parents couldn’t hold back their tears. But beyond the impressive quantity of cards from the Pokémon Trading Card Game, it was the intention that touched the family the most. Employees had taken care to include letters from around the world, sharing their own passion for Pikachu, Charizard, and the rest of the Pokémon universe.
Passing on generosity: Reid shares his Pokémon cards
How do you handle a sudden collection of 15,000 cards? For Reid’s parents, it was the perfect opportunity to teach their son a valuable life lesson: paying it forward.
Since the event, Reid has organized a big trading party in his class. He prepared a small bag with 60 cards for each of his classmates to play and trade with. This initiative not only introduced other children to the Pokémon world but also helped Reid understand the value of giving.
“ My son needs to learn the value of having received such generosity, and the role he must play as a giver ,” his father Graham wisely explains.

An adventure that is just beginning
Today, the huge collection sits proudly in the family living room. With about 14,000 cards still to sort, Reid has plenty to keep him busy for many months. He discovers new creatures and rare cards every day, extending the joy of this unforgettable gift.
