📢 A surprise update that changes everything

Nintendo has released a new system update version 22.0.0 for the Switch 2, introducing a new feature called « Handheld Mode Boost ». Released on March 17, 2026, this update was met with overwhelming enthusiasm by the global gaming community.

On the Switch 2, this update includes new features for GameChat, accessibility improvements, and multiple fixes, but most importantly, it adds the new « Handheld Mode Boost » that allows compatible Switch games to run as if they were in « TV Mode » when playing handheld.

🚀 What is the « Handheld Mode Boost »?

Simply put, this feature allows original Switch games to run in handheld mode as if they were connected to the dock in TV mode, taking advantage of the more powerful hardware of the Switch 2 and its built-in 1080p screen.

The problem this solves

The original Switch was equipped with a 720p screen, and most games ran at the console’s native resolution in handheld mode, switching to 1080p only in docked mode.1 On the Switch 2 and its 1080p screen, Switch 1 games therefore appeared blurry and pixelated in handheld mode… until today.

Until now, Switch 1 games were capped at 720p and the performance levels of the old hardware when played on Switch 2, but now players can reach 1080p by switching to TV mode.3

What Japanese sources say 🇯🇵

The Japanese site 4Gamer confirms: with this update, the new setting « 携帯モードブースト » (Handheld Mode Boost) has been added, allowing Switch software to run with the same performance as TV mode when playing in handheld or tabletop mode.

The site PHILE WEB (reported by Yahoo! News Japan) specifies that the big new feature is the addition of the « 携帯モードブースト », which raises Switch game performance to TV mode levels when playing in handheld mode, offering much sharper visuals.

📊 Concrete gains: resolutions before/after

Early tests from the community and specialized sites reveal spectacular improvements. Here are some examples cited by TheSixthAxis: Wolfenstein II goes from 360p (handheld) to dynamic 720p (dock), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity from dynamic 540p to dynamic 810p, Bayonetta 3 from 480p to 810p, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from dynamic 552p to 720p.3

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, for example, can now display in 1080p whereas it was previously limited to 600p.

Doom now runs at 576p instead of 408p with a higher level of detail, while Fire Emblem Warriors goes from 720p to 1080p.

🏆 The big winners of the update

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – The rebirth

Players using this feature will notice that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 now benefits from the removal of aggressive over-sharpening filters and the implementation of native anti-aliasing. The user interface of Xenoblade 2 is now in native 1080p in handheld mode.

Other standout titles

Among the first tests, the big winners include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Monster Hunter Rise, Bayonetta 3, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

The community also noted major improvements in other titles:

  1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses – "the game is so much better now it’s incredible"
  2. Spyro Reignited Trilogy – the game benefits from better graphics settings in boost mode, with more detailed shadows and denser vegetation
  3. Players have tested Dragon Quest XI, Pokémon Shield, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 & 3, Final Fantasy X, Super Mario Wonder, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate – all are significantly better, and in some cases the difference is huge

⚠️ Limitations to be aware of

Before rushing to enable this option, there are some important trade-offs:

  1. Attached Joy-Con 2 controllers are recognized as a Pro Controller, which may disable the touchscreen since the game runs in TV mode.
  2. Some on-screen instructions may be inaccurate, and some games using motion or touch controls are not supported.
  3. This may lead to increased system power consumption.

Unsupported games

Although Nintendo has not yet provided a complete list of compatible titles, an Eurogamer report indicates that the following games are not supported : Super Mario Maker 2, Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu!/Eevee!, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Clubhouse Games, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!, and Pikmin 1+2.
