The kites are easy to make and are fun to fly when there is a bit of wind. You can easily make a simple diamond-shaped kite in an afternoon. Start by building a frame, then measure and cut out the diamond for the canopy. Finally, add a tail and a string that the kite flies properly. When you're done, you can decorate it so it looks nice when it floats in the air.
1 - Make the frame
A - Form a cross.
- Place the 50 cm stick on the 60 cm stick, forming a Latin cross (longer at the bottom). These sticks form the frame of the kite.
- If you want make a kite For larger items, use longer chopsticks. Make sure the vertical chopstick is at least 10 cm longer than the horizontal one.
- Use string or glue. Wrap a string around the intersection of the two sticks, making one or two turns. Tie the ends together and cut off the excess with scissors. You can also apply a little glue between the two sticks at the point where they intersect and press down on this part to stick them together.
- Make sure the sticks are perpendicular when attached. The horizontal one should cross over the vertical one, forming a right angle.
- Use scissors to make a cut 2 to 5 cm from each end. The cuts should be made across the width of the rods and deep enough to accommodate the string you will use to attach the curtain.
- If you are using very thin chopsticks and string, you can make holes in the ends of the chopsticks instead of making notches.
- Wrap it around the notch at the top end of the vertical rod, making one turn. Then pass it around the notch at the right end of the horizontal rod, keeping it taut. Then go around the notch at the bottom end of the frame, then the one at the left end. Finally, make one or two more turns around the top end and tie the string. Cut off the excess with scissors.
- Stretch the string, but not too much, as it should not bend or deform the sticks.
- It will help the frame maintain its shape when you do fly the kite.
2 - Measure and cut the curtain
- Take a 1 m wide plastic bag, paper, or fabric to make the curtain. A large white garbage bag is the best choice, as it is both durable and easy to decorate. You can also use strong white adhesive paper or newspaper.
- If you have nothing else, you can use fabric, but it must be thick and strong so that the kite is strong.
- Spread the material you have chosen flat on the floor then center the frame on it.
- Place a ruler on the material of the curtain between the top end and the right end of the cross formed by the rods. Draw a diagonal line between these two points using the ruler. Do the same thing between the right end and the bottom end, the bottom end and the left end and finally the left end and the top end.
- When you are finished, you should have a diamond shape drawn on the curtain with the frame inside.
- Cut out the diamond shape with scissors, leaving a 5 cm wide border around the outline you drew. This will allow you to easily wrap the material around the frame.
- You should now have a clean diamond that will fit perfectly on the frame.
3 - Assemble the kite
- Apply a thin line of glue to the frame and place the edges of the curtain on top. Press them down to ensure they adhere firmly. You can also use masking tape or electrical tape to stick the frame to the inside of the curtain.
- Make sure the curtain is taut and securely attached, as it must not come loose from the frame in the air.
- Take a string at least 50 cm long to fly the kite. Use scissors to make a small hole in the canopy just above the point where the two sticks intersect. It should be large enough to pass your string through. Pass one end of the string through the hole and tie it firmly to the sticks where they intersect. Leave the rest of the string hanging out the other side of the hole while you finish the kite.
- You can then add a string to the thread to lengthen it depending on your height and arm length. Sometimes a longer thread can help the kite fly straighter.
- Attach a fairly wide 2 m long tail to the lower end of the frame by making several turns of the stick and knotting it firmly. Use thick string or a strip of fabric.
- Make a tail that matches the color of the veil so that the kite is aesthetically pleasing.
- Attach strips of fabric or ribbons 5 to 7 cm long, spaced 30 cm apart. Tie them to the tail with small knots and let them hang freely at the sides. These strips will balance the tail and help the kite stay upright.
- When you're done assembling it, use markers to write words or phrases on the curtain or to decorate it with a pattern like polka dots or stripes. You can also glue colored paper shapes like spirals, triangles, or circles on it.
- You could write your name on the kite so everyone knows it's yours and so you can see your name flying in the air.
- Test it somewhere where there are no trees or power lines. Look for a place near a body of water like a lake or the sea, as there will be a good wind to fly the kite. Hold the string firmly and run downwind. Release the kite while still running, pushing it upwards into the wind. Use the string to keep it in the air.
